Temp Probe Testing

Three items that could cause the temperature to be off more than a few degrees.
1. Temp sensor failed
2. The cable/wire going to the temp sensor failed
3. The sign controller (or GenCPU)

The following troubleshooting tips:
At the back of the sign controller short (or jumper) the two wires together that are attached at the screw terminals that the cable for temp wires are screwed down with. The temp on the sign (or in view display) should read -100 degrees. Make sure it stays at -100 for a few minutes (does not fluctuate). Then remove jumper.

Next unplug the green connector that the temp wires are screwed into, from the back of the controller (green connector should pull out). The temp on the sign (or in view display) should read 155 degrees. Make sure it stays at 155 for a few minutes (does not fluctuate). Plug the green connector back in.

If your results for the -100 and 155 test were good, then the sign controller is most likely working properly. The next step would be to short the wires from the cable together where the cable is connected to the temp probe. Undo the wire nuts at the temp probe and short the wires of the cable together. Not the wires coming from the temp probe, but the cable/wires coming from the sign controller. This will test the cable coming from the the sign controller. The temp on the sign (or in view display) should read -100 degrees. Make sure it stays at -100 for a few minutes (does not fluctuate). Then undo the wires of the cable that you shorted together. With these wires unhooked the temp on the sign (or in view display) should read 155 degrees. Make sure it stays at 155 for a few minutes (does not fluctuate).

If both test results are good you should try to make new connection between temp probe wire and cable/wire coming from the sign controller. Where the cable/wire from the sign controller meets the wire from the temp probe. Cut the temp probe wire about 2 inches and cut the cable/wire that attaches to the temp probe (coming from the controller) about 2 inches and place new wire nuts on the wires. Also at the sign controller make sure that the 2 screw on the green connector where the cable/wires are attached are tight. If the results for the -100 and 155 test were good and making new connections does not help. The next step would be to replace the Temp Probe. If the results for the -100 and 155 are not good, then give us a call, we may need to repair your sign controller.
Give us a call or email for pricing of the temp sensor/probe (this does not include the housing).
